How to prepare for a job interview: tips voor succes

11 November 2021

After applying for an exciting new role and having an intake interview with the recruitment agency, you now get to meet your future employer. A big step! Preparation is key if you want to stand out. Here’s how to prepare for a job interview effectively.

1. Read the job description carefully

Sometimes you apply for a specific vacancy yourself, other times the agency finds a role that fits your profile. Either way, make sure you read the job description again. This will help you understand the responsibilities and requirements. Do you still have questions about the role? Write them down so you can ask them during the interview.

Good interview preparation not only makes you feel more confident, it also ensures your future employer gets the right impression of you.

2. Research the company and your interviewer

During the intake interview, you probably already learned some details about the company and the person you’ll be meeting. Before your interview, do some extra research. What does the company do? What’s the company culture like? Are there any recent developments worth mentioning?

Also, take a look at who your interviewer is. What is their role? What can you find about their professional background? Knowing more about your conversation partner helps you feel more at ease and gives you extra talking points.

3. Prepare for common interview questions

Many interviews include similar questions – the good news is that you can prepare your answers in advance. Some of the most common job interview questions and answers include:

  • Tell me about yourself.

  • What are your strengths?

  • What are your weaknesses?

  • Why are you a good fit for this role?

Think about your answers ahead of time. This is your chance to convince the employer of your skills and experience.

4. Ask your own questions

Some candidates think it’s not appropriate to ask questions during an interview, but actually, it’s highly recommended! Asking questions shows you are prepared and genuinely interested. It also helps you decide if the company and role are a good match for you.

Examples of good questions:

  • What does the team look like?

  • What do you enjoy most about working here?

  • How would you describe the company culture?

5. Be on time

You only get one chance to make a first impression. Make sure you plan your route in advance, check for possible delays, and arrive on time. Punctuality shows respect and professionalism.

6. Dress appropriately

What to wear to a job interview can vary depending on the role and industry. As a rule of thumb: it’s better to be slightly overdressed than underdressed. Choose professional clothing that makes you feel confident and comfortable.
